MONTGOMERY, Orange County, N.Y., Sept. 16, 2026 — Four drivers were injured on Monday afternoon, September 14, in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 84 in the Town of Montgomery, according to state police.
Troopers said the crash happened just before 4:15 p.m. when a westbound car rear-ended another vehicle in the right travel lane, pushing it off the road. The first car then struck a third vehicle also traveling in the right lane, spun across the roadway, and hit a fourth vehicle in the left lane. That car caught fire after the impacts, authorities said.
Firefighters from Maybrook and Coldenham responded and put out the fire, according to state police. The driver identified by authorities as having caused the initial collision was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. The drivers of the other three vehicles were taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown. All four were treated for injuries described by authorities as non-life-threatening.
State police said their investigation found signs of impairment in the driver blamed for starting the chain of crashes. That driver was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, along with several traffic violations, according to authorities. He is due in Montgomery Town Court on Oct. 21.
