Frequently Asked Questions
How long do fatal-crash investigations typically take?
Investigators often need several weeks to months to finish a full reconstruction, especially when toxicology results or mechanical inspections are involved. Initial findings may be released sooner, but final conclusions usually take longer.
How often does impairment factor into fatal crashes?
Impairment from alcohol or drugs is a factor in a large share of fatal crashes nationwide, though each case depends on toxicology testing and officer observations at the scene. Investigators typically note whether signs of impairment were present at the time of initial reporting.
Where do fatal crashes most often happen?
Rural highways and roads with higher speed limits see a larger share of fatal crashes than city streets, in part because higher speeds increase the force of a collision.
What makes a crash more likely to be fatal?
Speed differential, lack of separation between vehicles and smaller road users, such as cyclists, and nighttime visibility all increase the odds that a crash results in a death rather than an injury.
What to Do After an E-Bike Crash in Montgomery, Texas
If you're involved in or witness an e-bike crash, call 911 immediately and stay at the scene until help arrives. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical evaluation is important since some injuries from being struck by a vehicle aren't immediately obvious. Get the names and contact information of any witnesses, and if it's safe to do so, take photos of the scene, the vehicles involved, and any visible road conditions. Once law enforcement arrives, request a copy of the incident report number so you can follow up later. Giving yourself time to rest and seeking support, whether medical or emotional, matters in the days after a serious crash.
