How Can Multi-Vehicle Crashes Become More Complex on Busy Roads?
When several vehicles are involved, one impact can quickly lead to additional contact with nearby traffic. Drivers may have limited time to react, especially when vehicles are traveling close together.
Damaged cars can also block multiple lanes or shoulders, making it harder for traffic to move around the scene. Debris and disabled vehicles may add to the disruption.
Traffic volume, vehicle spacing, travel speed, and the number of impacts can all affect injury severity and roadway delays. Even when injuries appear limited, medical evaluation may be needed because some symptoms can develop after the collision.
