Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes crashes like this one at intersections?
Failure-to-yield crashes often happen when a driver turning left misjudges the speed or distance of oncoming traffic. Limited visibility, distraction, or a brief lapse in attention can all play a role.
Does speed make intersection crashes worse?
Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force of impact, which raises the likelihood of serious injury even in a side-impact or turning collision.
How does distracted driving factor into these collisions?
A driver who glances at a phone or is otherwise not fully focused on the road can miss an approaching vehicle, especially when making a turn across oncoming lanes.
Do weather or road conditions contribute to intersection crashes?
They can, though in this case the road was reported dry. Wet, icy, or poorly lit conditions generally make it harder to judge gaps in traffic and stop safely.
