Investigators said the driver attempted to return to the pavement but lost control before the motorcycle crashed.
No names or ages of those involved have been released. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Major Accident Investigation Team continue to investigate the fatal collision. Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the person who died, and we hope for the recovery of the injured individual.
Why Gravel Shoulders Can Be Hazardous for Motorcycles
Motorcycles are more sensitive to changes in road surface conditions than larger vehicles. Gravel shoulders can reduce tire traction, making it difficult for riders to maintain balance or safely return to the roadway.
Sudden steering corrections on loose surfaces may cause a motorcycle to slide, wobble, or overturn. These crashes can become especially dangerous because riders and passengers have little physical protection during an impact.
Safety experts encourage motorcyclists to slow down gradually if they leave the pavement and avoid abrupt movements while attempting to regain control. Staying alert to changing road conditions can help reduce the risk of serious motorcycle crashes.
