Why Motorcycle Crashes on Interstates Often Result in Severe Outcomes
Motorcycle crashes on interstate highways can be especially serious because of higher travel speeds and the limited protection available to riders. Unlike occupants of passenger vehicles, motorcyclists are exposed to direct impact forces during a collision, which can increase the risk of severe injury.
Traffic density, lane changes, merging activity, and reduced reaction time at highway speeds may all contribute to motorcycle collisions. Investigators often review vehicle positions, roadway conditions, visibility, and witness statements to better understand how a crash occurred. Physical evidence from the roadway and damage to the vehicles can also help reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to a fatal collision.
