What Risks Do Motorcycle Passengers Face in a Two-Vehicle Crash?
Motorcycle passengers face many of the same dangers as riders, but with even less control over what happens. They have no handlebars to grip and no ability to steer or brake, which means they rely entirely on the rider’s actions in the moments before a crash. Without that control, passengers can be thrown from the bike or bear the full force of a collision with very little protection.
Helmets and protective gear reduce the risk of head and body injuries, but they cannot prevent all harm in a serious impact. Passengers are also more likely to be struck by other vehicles or road surfaces after being separated from the motorcycle. The severity of their injuries often depends on how they land and whether protective equipment was worn at the time.
