Why Left-Turn Motorcycle Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous
Motorcycle crashes involving left-turning vehicles are common on busy highways and secondary roads. These incidents often happen when a driver misjudges the speed or distance of an approaching motorcycle before entering a travel lane. Because motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles, they can be harder to spot quickly, especially near driveways or intersections.
Riders have far less physical protection than people in larger vehicles, increasing the risk of severe injuries during roadway contact. Visibility, traffic speed, and reaction time are frequently reviewed after these types of crashes. Transportation safety experts often encourage drivers to pause longer before turning across traffic and to check carefully for motorcycles approaching from either direction. Bright clothing, daytime headlights, and clear sightlines may also help improve visibility for riders traveling on major roads.
