What Are the Risks Motorcyclists Face When Vehicles Turn Across Their Path?
One of the most common and deadly crash types involving motorcycles occurs when a turning vehicle cuts across an oncoming rider’s path. These collisions often happen quickly, leaving the motorcyclist little time to brake or steer clear. The rider’s smaller profile can make them harder for drivers to see, particularly at intersections or when a vehicle is turning into a driveway or parking lot entrance.
Helmet use is one of the most significant factors in whether a motorcyclist survives a serious crash. Riders without helmets face a substantially higher risk of fatal head injuries. In Oregon, helmet laws apply to all motorcycle riders regardless of age or experience level. Even in lower-speed collisions, the absence of a helmet can be the difference between a survivable and non-survivable outcome.
