James City, NC (July 31, 2026) – A motorcycle rider died after a collision on Old Cherry Point Road at Airport Road in James City. The fatal accident claimed the life of Shawn Hoveland, owner of Beartown Bistro & Pizza Company.
Investigators said Mariana Libengood was driving on Old Cherry Point Road when she attempted to turn left onto Airport Road and failed to yield to Hoveland’s motorcycle. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the site of the wreck.
Friends and members of the community have shared tributes to Hoveland, describing him as a caring employer and friend. Beartown Bistro & Pizza Company also announced it will remain open, saying that is what Hoveland would have wanted.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation as additional details are gathered.
