Tuscarawas County, OH (August 31, 2026) – A 73-year-old motorcyclist was killed on Saturday afternoon, August 29, in a crash on State Route 212 just east of County Road 86 in Warren Township. The collision happened at approximately 12:30 p.m.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the motorcycle was traveling east on State Route 212 when a westbound Honda Civic crossed left of center and struck the rider.
After the impact, the Honda left the roadway and hit a guardrail. The motorcycle also went off the road, struck a guardrail, and slid down an embankment.
The motorcyclist died at the scene. The 32-year-old Honda driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Investigators said they believe impairment may have been a factor, and the crash remains under investigation. We extend our sincere condolences to the motorcyclist’s family and loved ones, and we hope the injured driver recovers fully.
Why Can Head-on Crashes Be Especially Deadly for Motorcyclists?
Motorcyclists have far less protection than occupants of enclosed vehicles, leaving riders directly exposed to impact forces in a collision.
A head-on or opposing-direction impact can be especially severe because the vehicles’ closing speeds can generate powerful forces in a very short time. A rider may also be thrown from the motorcycle and strike the roadway, a guardrail, or another object.
Travel speed, impact angle, protective gear, roadway design, and the sequence of secondary impacts can all affect injury severity. Fixed roadside objects can add another source of trauma after the initial collision.
