Why Curves on Rural Highways Can Present Added Risks for Motorcyclists
Roadway curves can be especially challenging for motorcycle riders because they require careful speed management, balance, and steering control. Even a slight misjudgment when entering a curve may reduce a rider’s ability to stay within their lane.
Factors such as pavement conditions, loose gravel, uneven surfaces, and limited visibility can further increase risk on winding highways. Motorcycles are also more sensitive to changes in road conditions than larger passenger vehicles, making stability a greater concern in certain driving environments.
When a motorcycle crosses the center line, the likelihood of a serious outcome rises because of the reduced protection available to the rider. Investigators often review roadway design, weather conditions, vehicle positions, and physical evidence to better understand how a fatal traffic crash developed and what circumstances may have contributed to it.
