Why Motorcycle Riders Face Greater Risks in Traffic Crashes
Motorcycle riders have less physical protection than occupants of passenger vehicles, making them more vulnerable to serious injuries in collisions. Even with protective gear, riders can be exposed to significant forces during contact with larger vehicles.
Intersections and roadway crossings are common sites of motorcycle crashes because drivers and riders must react to changing traffic conditions in a limited amount of time. Visibility can also be a factor, as motorcycles have a smaller profile than most other vehicles.
Following a motorcycle accident, investigators often review vehicle positions, roadway conditions, witness statements, and any available surveillance footage. They may also examine factors such as speed, traffic controls, and driver awareness to better understand how the sequence of events unfolded. Proper helmet use, protective clothing, and defensive riding practices can help reduce the severity of injuries in many roadway encounters.
