Why Rear-End Motorcycle Crashes Cause Serious Injuries
Motorcycle riders have far less protection than occupants inside passenger vehicles, which makes rear-end collisions especially dangerous. In these situations, even when a motorcycle strikes a stopped vehicle, the rider can be thrown forward with significant force.
Additionally, speed can increase the severity of these crashes because it reduces the time available to react to slowing or stopped traffic. At the same time, hills, intersections, and turn lanes can create sudden traffic changes that are harder for riders to anticipate.
After a collision, witnesses and bystanders sometimes provide immediate aid before emergency crews arrive, which may help stabilize injured riders. Because of these risks, safety experts encourage motorcyclists to maintain safe following distances and reduce speed in areas with heavy traffic or turning vehicles.
