Why Motorcycle Riders Face Greater Risks in Collisions With Larger Vehicles
Motorcycles provide far less physical protection than passenger vehicles, making riders more vulnerable during traffic collisions. Even at moderate speeds, contact with an SUV, truck, or car can cause severe injuries.
Several factors can influence the severity of a motorcycle crash, including speed, point of contact, roadway conditions, and the use of protective equipment. Because riders are exposed, they are more likely to experience serious trauma than occupants of enclosed vehicles.
Roadway visibility is another factor often examined after motorcycle collisions. Drivers and riders must constantly monitor surrounding traffic, especially on busy routes where vehicles may be turning, changing lanes, or entering the flow of traffic. These conditions can increase the likelihood of a collision when road users fail to see one another in time.
