What Happens When a Vehicle Is Struck by a Train?
Train and vehicle accidents can produce severe forces because trains are much heavier than passenger vehicles. People inside a vehicle may be injured by sudden movement, crushed areas of the passenger compartment, or contact with interior surfaces.
Common injuries can include broken bones, head trauma, neck injuries, and damage to the chest or abdomen. Seat belts can help keep occupants in place during sudden movement, while airbags may provide additional protection.
Rail crossings require drivers to watch for warning signals, crossing gates, and approaching trains. A train may also need a long distance to stop, even after the operator applies the brakes. Drivers should never attempt to cross tracks after warning devices activate or gates begin to lower.
