Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers and train operators lower the chance of hitting someone on foot near tracks?
Slowing down near crossings, staying alert for pedestrians, and never assuming a track or crossing is clear can help prevent collisions. Pedestrians should also only cross at marked, authorized locations.
What injuries are common when a pedestrian is struck by a train?
These collisions often cause severe trauma, including broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal injuries, because of the size and speed difference between a train and a person.
What usually causes pedestrian-train accidents?
Common factors include pedestrians crossing at unauthorized points, distraction from phones or headphones, poor visibility at night, and delayed reaction time near moving trains.
Does speed matter in these crashes?
Yes. Higher train speeds reduce stopping distance and increase the force of impact, which generally leads to more severe injuries and lower chances of survival.
What to Do After a Train Collision in Mount Rainier, Maryland
If you witness a pedestrian struck by a train, call 911 immediately and avoid approaching the tracks until emergency crews arrive and confirm it's safe. Anyone involved or injured should seek medical evaluation right away, even if injuries seem minor at first, since trauma from train collisions can be serious and not immediately obvious. It's also helpful to note what you saw, including the time and location, in case investigators or a treating physician need that information later.
