MOUNTAIN VIEW, Santa Clara County, Calif., Sept. 19, 2026 — A three-vehicle crash blocked a lane on southbound US-101 at San Antonio Road on Friday night, September 18. At least one person was reported injured.

California Highway Patrol radio logs show the crash was reported around 7:32 p.m. involving three vehicles, including a gray Mazda sedan and a red Toyota sedan, with a third vehicle not yet identified. Dispatchers noted vehicles on the right shoulder shortly after the initial report.

An ambulance was requested for an injury a few minutes later, and CHP records describe the collision as a minor-injury crash. The extent of any injuries has not been released. A tow truck was also called to the scene to remove at least one vehicle.

Authorities briefly noted fire personnel working the scene, and traffic in the slow lane was blocked while crews worked. A tow company was still en route as of about 7:41 p.m., with the lane reported cleared roughly 20 minutes later, near 8 p.m.

The cause of the crash has not been determined. CHP has not said whether any citations have been issued.

We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.

A Common Misconception About Multi-Vehicle Freeway Crashes

Many drivers assume that if a crash involves three or more vehicles, it must have started with a dramatic, high-speed impact. In practice, many chain-reaction crashes on freeways begin with a much smaller event, a sudden lane change, a driver braking for slowed traffic, or a vehicle drifting onto the shoulder, and grow as following vehicles react too late or misjudge the space around them.

Another assumption is that injuries in these crashes are rare because speeds on a stretch like US-101 are usually reduced by congestion. That is not necessarily true. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 1,947,298 passenger-vehicle occupants were injured in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023, a reminder that injury crashes happen across a wide range of speeds and traffic conditions, not just in high-speed impacts.

The number of vehicles involved also does not reliably predict how serious a crash will be. A two-car crash can produce severe injuries, while a three-car pileup at low speed may result in only minor ones. Investigators generally look at each vehicle's speed, position, and point of impact separately rather than assuming severity from the vehicle count alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do immediately after a car accident?

Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, and call 911. Exchange information with other drivers, take photos of the scene and vehicle damage, and avoid discussing fault until authorities have gathered the facts.

Where do most traffic accidents happen?

A large share of crashes occur on busy roadways and highways during peak commute hours, when traffic density and speed differences between vehicles increase the chance of sudden braking or lane-change conflicts.

How can drivers reduce their crash risk?

Keeping a safe following distance, avoiding distractions, and adjusting speed for traffic and weather conditions all lower the odds of being involved in a collision, especially on multi-lane freeways.

What injuries are most common in car accidents?

Whiplash, soft-tissue injuries, and cuts or bruises from broken glass or impact are common in lower-speed crashes. Higher-speed or multi-vehicle crashes can also cause fractures or head injuries, though severity varies widely from case to case.

What to Do After a Car Accident in Mountain View, CA

If you're involved in a crash on a busy corridor like US-101, try to move to the shoulder if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so. Turn on hazard lights and stay alert to traffic moving around you while waiting for help.

Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since some injuries from a collision aren't immediately obvious. Keep a record of any symptoms that develop in the days after the crash.

File a report with CHP or local police if one isn't already being generated at the scene, and hold onto any documentation, photos, or witness contact information in case you need it later. Mountain View drivers dealing with the aftermath of a crash should give themselves time to recover both physically and logistically before returning to their normal routine.
