Chain-reaction crashes on busy freeways can involve multiple points of impact, making it important for investigators to document the scene carefully. Officers examine vehicle positions, damage patterns, debris, roadway conditions, and witness statements to determine how the collision unfolded.

Investigators may also review traffic camera footage and vehicle data when available to identify contributing factors such as speed, lane changes, or driver actions before the crash.
