How Medical Emergencies Can Contribute to Serious Highway Crashes
Medical emergencies behind the wheel can create dangerous driving conditions within seconds. Sudden health problems such as heart attacks, seizures, fainting episodes, or diabetic complications may leave a driver unable to control a vehicle safely. When large commercial trucks are involved, the risk of widespread harm often increases because of the vehicle’s size and weight.
After these types of crashes, investigators commonly examine medical records, witness statements, roadway evidence, and vehicle movement to better understand what happened before the vehicles came together. Traffic camera footage and data from onboard truck systems may also help provide additional context. In some cases, emergency health episodes occur without warning, making them difficult to predict even when drivers follow normal safety procedures.
