What Often Causes Multi-Vehicle Highway Collisions
Multi-vehicle roadway crashes often occur when traffic suddenly slows or stops, leaving drivers little time to react. On busy interstates, chain-reaction collisions may involve several cars within seconds, especially near congested travel lanes.
Blocked lanes can create additional hazards for approaching drivers, particularly when visibility is limited or traffic is moving at highway speeds. Investigators commonly review the following after these collisions occur: distance, driver attention, braking patterns, and roadway conditions. Interstate crashes involving multiple vehicles may also require extended lane closures to remove debris and safely restore traffic flow.
