MURRIETA, Riverside County, Calif., Oct. 12, 2026 — A motorcyclist was hurt Saturday evening, October 10, in a hit and run crash on Interstate 215 North near Clinton Keith Road in Murrieta, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The California Highway Patrol said the rider was splitting lanes when another vehicle reportedly moved close to the motorcycle and sidesiped it. The impact reportedly caused the rider to lose control and go down in the center divider. The motorcycle came to rest in the center divider as well.
Murrieta Fire personnel responded to the scene, and the rider was reported down and on the ground near the number one lane. A person who called in the crash told dispatchers the rider might be moved to the right shoulder for safety, along with others who had stopped at the scene.
The driver did not stay at the scene, and the California Highway Patrol is treating the case as a felony hit and run. Investigators shut down the number one and two lanes for a period while they worked the crash, and the lanes were later reopened. A tow was called to remove the motorcycle from the roadway.
The investigation remains open. We wish the injured a swift and full recovery.
Where Lane-Splitting Motorcycle Crashes Concentrate on Freeways
Crashes like this one tend to cluster on multi-lane freeways during slow or stop and go traffic, where riders moving between lanes have little space to react if a car drifts or changes lanes without warning. Stretches near interchanges and off ramps, where vehicles merge and speeds vary widely, see a steady share of these collisions because drivers are focused on exiting or merging instead of scanning for motorcycles between lanes.
Dense urban freeway corridors also produce more of these crashes simply because of traffic volume and the frequency of lane changes. A driver checking a mirror for a half second, or misjudging the width of a lane, can bring a car into contact with a motorcycle passing close by.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 33 motorcyclists who died were not wearing helmets in 2023. That figure points to how much protective gear and visibility matter once a crash of any kind, including a sideswipe in heavy traffic, is already underway.
Frequently Asked Questions
What protective gear reduces injury for riders?
A DOT-approved helmet, a riding jacket and pants built for abrasion resistance, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots all reduce the severity of injuries in a fall or collision.
What are common causes of motorcycle crashes?
Drivers failing to see a motorcycle before changing lanes or turning, following too closely, and lane-splitting incidents where a car and bike occupy the same space are among the frequent causes reported by investigators.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries?
A motorcycle offers no outer shell or airbags, so a rider absorbs the impact directly and is often thrown from the bike, which raises the chance of serious injury compared with a car crash at similar speed.
How do left-turning vehicles cause motorcycle collisions?
A driver turning left across traffic may misjudge a motorcycle's speed or distance, or simply not see it, and turn directly into its path. This is one of the most common ways cars and motorcycles collide at intersections.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Murrieta, CA
If you are involved in a motorcycle crash, move to a safe area if you are able and call 911 right away. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical evaluation is worth getting, since road rash, joint damage, and head impacts don't always show symptoms right away.
Get the name and contact information of anyone who stopped to help or witnessed what happened, since their account can matter later. Photograph the scene, your gear, and the bike if it's safe to do so. Report the crash to local police or the California Highway Patrol if they are not already on scene, and ask for a copy of the report once it's available.
