NABESNA, Unorganized Borough, Alaska, Sept. 19, 2026 — Two people died on Thursday evening, September 17, when a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff near Nabesna, north of the Wrangell Mountains. The aircraft, identified as a Piper Cub, had departed from a dirt airstrip in the area.
Alaska State Troopers said in an online statement that they were notified of the crash just before 8 p.m. The crash site was reported near Snag Creek, according to an aviation safety investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board’s Alaska region.
It was not immediately known whether the flight was a commercial or private operation, the NTSB spokesperson said. Investigators have not released the names, ages, or hometowns of those killed.
The NTSB said it hopes to send an investigator to the crash site within a day or two, weather permitting. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Authorities noted the crash is the fourth fatal plane crash in Alaska in less than a month, with 16 deaths across those incidents combined.
