Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to avoid losing control on curves or turns?
Slowing down before entering a curve, rather than braking mid-turn, gives tires more grip and reduces the chance of running off the roadway. Staying well under the posted speed and watching for road conditions like gravel or wet pavement also helps.
What injuries commonly result from single-vehicle crashes into fixed objects like trees?
Impacts with trees or poles can cause head and chest injuries, broken bones, and internal injuries, even when seat belts are worn, because the vehicle itself absorbs a sudden stop rather than slowing gradually.
What typically causes a driver to run off the road on a curve?
Common factors include speed that's too fast for the curve, distraction, drowsiness, and unfamiliarity with the road. Investigators usually look at all of these when a cause isn't immediately clear.
Does speed make a difference in how severe a crash is?
Yes. Higher speed means more energy has to be absorbed in a collision, which increases the risk of serious injury or death even in a short crash sequence.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Nashville, TN
If you're involved in a single-vehicle crash, move to safety if possible and call 911 right away. Even if injuries aren't obvious at first, it's worth having everyone in the vehicle checked by a medical provider, since some injuries from a sudden impact don't show symptoms immediately. Stay at the scene until police arrive and document what you can, including the road conditions and anything that might explain what happened. Keep a copy of the police report and any medical records for your own files. Giving yourself and your family time to process a crash like this is just as important as handling the practical steps.
