Frequently Asked Questions
What are blind spots on a large truck, and why do they matter?
Trucks have large unseen areas directly behind, in front of, and along both sides of the cab. A car that lingers in one of these zones may not be visible to the driver, which can contribute to crashes at intersections or during turns and lane changes.
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partly or fully beneath a truck's trailer, usually during a collision from behind or the side. These crashes can cause severe damage to the smaller vehicle's upper frame and roof.
What typically causes large-truck collisions?
Common factors include limited visibility at intersections, failure to yield, driver fatigue, following too closely, and the size and weight difference between trucks and passenger cars, which affects stopping distance and impact severity.
What can drivers do to safely share intersections with trucks?
Give trucks extra room to turn or stop, avoid lingering beside or behind a trailer, and wait for a truck to fully clear an intersection before proceeding, since trucks need more space and time to maneuver.
