NEW LENOX, Will County, Ill., Oct. 15, 2026 — One person died Wednesday night, October 14, after a two-vehicle crash at Route 6 and Cedar Crossings Boulevard in New Lenox turned into a rollover fire. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and did not survive, according to New Lenox police.

Officers responded around 7:30 p.m. to the intersection, near Silver Cross Hospital and the Crossroads Sports Complex. One of the two vehicles involved rolled over and caught fire. The driver was thrown from the vehicle and died of injuries from the crash. That victim's name has not been released.

The driver of the second vehicle was taken to Silver Cross Hospital with injuries reported from the crash. Police said neither vehicle was carrying passengers.

The intersection was shut down for several hours, reopening around 4 a.m. Thursday. New Lenox Police Chief Micah Nuesse said a multi-jurisdictional team is investigating the crash, and officials said more details will be released as they become available.

Our sympathies are with the family of the person who lost their life.

Why Rollover Crashes Turn Deadly So Fast

Rollovers happen when a vehicle trips, often after a tire catches a curb, median, or soft shoulder, sending it onto its side or roof instead of sliding to a stop. Once a vehicle starts to roll, occupants who aren't properly restrained can be thrown around the cabin or ejected through a window or door, which is often the difference between walking away and not surviving.

Speed and the angle of impact both shape how violent that roll becomes. A vehicle that rolls multiple times absorbs and redirects far more energy than one that simply skids or spins, and a ruptured fuel line or a damaged battery in an electric vehicle can turn a rollover into a fire within seconds, reducing the time occupants have to get clear.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 37,654 fatal traffic crashes occurred in 2023. Rollovers account for a small share of all crashes but a large share of fatal crashes, in part because ejection removes the protection a vehicle's structure would otherwise provide.
