Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur Near Intersections
Intersections are common locations for pedestrian crashes because multiple traffic movements occur simultaneously. Vehicles may be turning, accelerating, or slowing down while pedestrians attempt to cross the roadway.
Visibility can also influence how these incidents happen. Parked vehicles, street lighting, and traffic flow may limit how quickly a driver notices someone entering the roadway, especially in the evening.
Pedestrians may cross within marked crosswalks or near intersections where sidewalks meet the street. In busy areas, drivers and pedestrians must often react quickly to changing traffic signals and surrounding movement.
Road width, vehicle speed, and lighting conditions can also affect the severity of these collisions. When a person is struck by a moving vehicle, the lack of physical protection can lead to serious or fatal injuries.
