NEWPORT, Washington County, Ohio, Oct. 9, 2026 — A woman died on Thursday morning, October 8, after her car ran off State Route 7 and rolled over in Newport Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The crash happened around 7:30 a.m., troopers said.

The woman was reportedly driving along State Route 7 when her car left the roadway, struck a bank, and flipped, the Marietta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported. She was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Newport Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, the Washington County Coroner's Office, and Shea Towing also responded to help at the scene. Her name has not been released pending notification of family, and no other details about the vehicle or the cause of the crash have been made public.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation. No further details were available as of Thursday.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

Rollover Crashes and Why the Numbers Matter

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one person was killed every 13 minutes in traffic crashes in 2023. That rate means a death from a crash, as this one happens somewhere in the country several times an hour, every day of the year, even though each one is reported locally as a single, isolated event.

Rollovers make up a small share of all crashes but a much larger share of deaths, in part because the people involved are often thrown from the vehicle when it is not fully occupied by a properly worn seat belt. Single-vehicle crashes on rural roads, including routes that look ordinary and straight, account for a steady share of the total number of fatalities the federal data track each year.

The 13-minute figure is a national average pulled across urban interstates, rural two-lanes, and everything in between. It is not a prediction about any one stretch of road, but it is one of the few numbers that lets a single crash be measured against the scale of the broader problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do fatal crashes happen most often?

Federal crash data shows a large share of fatal crashes occur on rural roads and two-lane highways, often in single-vehicle crashes where a car leaves the road.

What makes a crash more likely to be fatal?

Higher speeds, roadway departure, and rollover all raise the odds of a fatal outcome, especially when an occupant is not restrained and is thrown from the vehicle.

Does seat belt use really make that much difference?

Yes. Seat belts keep occupants inside the vehicle during a rollover or impact, which lowers the chance of being thrown out, one of the biggest factors in whether a crash turns fatal.

What to Do After a Rollover Crash in Newport, Ohio

If you witness or are involved in a rollover, call 911 immediately and stay clear of the vehicle until emergency crews arrive, especially if there is any risk of fire or further movement. Do not attempt to move an injured person unless there is an immediate danger, since the wrong movement can worsen some injuries.

Anyone involved in a single-vehicle crash, even one that seems minor at first, should still get checked by a medical provider, because injuries from being thrown or jolted inside a vehicle are not always obvious right away. Get a copy of the official crash report once it is available, and keep any documentation from first responders or towing services for your records.
