Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes multi-vehicle pile-ups?
These crashes often start with one vehicle slowing suddenly, a lane blockage, or reduced visibility, and then spread as following drivers can't stop in time.
Why do chain-reaction crashes happen on highways?
Tight following distances and high speeds leave little time for later drivers to react once the vehicles ahead of them start colliding, so the crash spreads backward through traffic.
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Turn on your hazard lights, stay in your vehicle if it's safe to do so, and watch your mirrors for approaching traffic that may not see the slowdown in time.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Norfolk, VA
If you're involved in or approaching a multi-vehicle crash, move to the shoulder or a safe area if your vehicle is drivable, and turn on hazard lights to alert other drivers. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries, as some injuries aren't obvious right away, so it's worth getting checked by a medical provider afterward. If law enforcement responds, get a copy of the report for your records, and take photos of the scene and vehicle positions if you're able to safely. Norfolk drivers dealing with the aftermath of a highway crash should also notify their insurance company promptly and keep records of any medical visits or vehicle repairs.
