Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal crashes most frequently happen?
Highways and interstates see a large share of fatal crashes because of higher speeds and the mix of vehicles merging, exiting, and changing lanes at those speeds.
What factors make a crash more likely to be deadly?
High speed, multiple vehicles, nighttime or low-light conditions, and lack of seat belt use all raise the odds that a crash will be fatal rather than survivable.
How does speed affect whether people survive a crash?
The faster vehicles are moving on impact, the more force is transferred to occupants, which raises the risk of serious or fatal injury even in a vehicle with modern safety equipment.
Why does wearing a seat belt matter so much?
A seat belt keeps occupants from being thrown from their seat or out of the vehicle during a crash, which lowers the chance of fatal injury in most collision types.
