Frequently Asked Questions

Why are head-on crashes often so serious?

When two vehicles meet front to front, their combined speed is absorbed in the collision. That means more force is transferred into both vehicles and their occupants than in most other crash types, often causing severe injuries.

How can drivers avoid being in a head-on collision?

Staying alert for vehicles crossing the center line, avoiding distraction, and slowing down on narrow or winding roads can help drivers react in time to avoid an oncoming vehicle that drifts into their lane.

Where do head-on crashes most often happen?

They're common on two-lane rural roads without a median, especially where passing lanes, curves, or limited visibility bring opposing traffic close together.

Does passing contribute to head-on crashes?

Yes. Attempting to pass on a two-lane road puts a vehicle directly into the oncoming lane, and misjudging the distance or speed of approaching traffic is a frequent factor in these collisions.
