Frequently Asked Questions
Are intersections a common site for bicycle crashes?
Yes. Turning vehicles, cross traffic and limited visibility at intersections make them one of the more frequent locations for collisions between cars and cyclists, compared with open road segments.
What injuries do cyclists typically suffer in these crashes?
Common injuries include fractures, road rash, head injuries, and injuries from being thrown off the bike onto pavement. Severity usually depends on vehicle speed and whether the rider was wearing a helmet.
What usually causes car-versus-bicycle collisions?
Frequent causes include a driver failing to see a cyclist, turning across a bike's path, following too closely, or a cyclist entering traffic unexpectedly. Investigators determine the cause in each case based on evidence at the scene.
