Frequently Asked Questions
Which vehicles are most prone to rolling over?
Taller, narrower vehicles such as SUVs, pickup trucks, and vans have a higher center of gravity and are more likely to roll over than low-profile passenger cars, especially during sharp steering moves or when a tire catches an edge or curb.
How does seat belt use affect survival in a rollover?
Seat belts keep occupants positioned inside the vehicle during a rollover, which lowers the chance of being thrown against the roof, windows, or outside the vehicle entirely. Unbelted occupants face a much higher risk of serious injury or ejection.
What is a "tripped" rollover?
A tripped rollover happens when a vehicle sliding sideways hits an object, such as a curb, soft shoulder, or another car, that catches a tire or wheel and causes the vehicle to tip over. Most rollovers on regular roads are tripped rather than caused by high speed alone on a flat surface.
