What Happens During a Mayday Call at a Structure Fire?
A mayday call is used when firefighters face immediate danger while operating inside a burning building. This alert signals that a crew member may be trapped, disoriented, or in need of urgent help. Once the call is made, other teams shift focus to locate and remove those firefighters as quickly as possible.
Fires in residential homes can create heavy smoke, extreme heat, and unstable floors. Upper levels may become especially hazardous if flames spread quickly through walls or attic spaces. Limited visibility can make it hard to find exits, increasing the risk for those inside.
Departments train regularly for mayday situations so they can respond quickly and reduce the risk of injury or death during dangerous fire conditions.
