NORWALK, Los Angeles County, Calif., Sept. 18, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash on the connector from southbound I-605 to southbound I-5 left a pedestrian injured and a van on fire late Wednesday night, September 16, according to authorities. All lanes of the connector were shut down for a time as crews worked the scene.

Investigators said the crash involved at least three vehicles, including a van that reportedly caught fire in a lane of traffic and later burned down before the fire was put out. A motorcycle was reportedly involved as well, with a tire from the motorcycle found lodged underneath one of the other vehicles, according to radio traffic. The van's driver told authorities no one was inside the vehicle when it caught fire, and that occupants were out of the vehicle and standing nearby.

A pedestrian was reported down on the right shoulder near the interchange, and paramedics were called to the scene for that injury, authorities said. Fire crews and medics briefly placed the call on hold while managing the fire before continuing evaluation of the injured pedestrian.

All lanes were reported stopped for a period as crews worked to clear the wreckage, with flares later placed to manage traffic through part of the mainline. Two tow trucks were called to remove the burned van and a white SUV involved in the crash.

The incident remains under review. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a speedy recovery.

What Actually Cuts Down on Pedestrian Crashes Along Freeways at Night

Darkness plays a bigger role in freeway pedestrian crashes than most drivers realize. A person standing or walking along a shoulder or interchange at night is much harder to spot than in daylight, especially where lighting is limited and drivers are focused on merging traffic instead of scanning the roadside. Even a few extra seconds of visibility can be the difference between a driver reacting in time and not seeing a person until it's too late.

Road design changes have shown real results in this area. Improved shoulder and interchange lighting, reflective markings, and barriers that keep pedestrians separated from live lanes all reduce the odds that someone on foot ends up in a driver's blind spot. Some interchanges have also added wider, more visible shoulders so that disabled vehicles and the people who get out of them are less exposed to passing traffic.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, pedestrian fatalities decreased from 1,213 in 2022 to 1,106 in 2023. That drop reflects a mix of factors, including better lighting, targeted enforcement, and infrastructure changes at high-risk locations, showing that pedestrian deaths are not fixed or inevitable but respond to changes in the roadway environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?

Get to a safe location away from traffic if possible, call 911, and wait for paramedics even if injuries seem minor. Some injuries, especially head or internal injuries, are not obvious right away.

Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?

Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers are not always able to see or react in time, particularly at night or on freeway ramps and interchanges where pedestrians are not expected.

How can drivers reduce the risk of hitting a pedestrian?

Slowing down in low-light areas, scanning shoulders and medians on freeways, and giving extra space around disabled vehicles or stopped traffic all help drivers spot people on foot sooner.

What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?

Broken bones, head injuries, and internal injuries are common, along with road rash and soft tissue damage from being struck or falling to the pavement.
