Why Do Pedestrian Accidents Often Occur at Intersections?
Intersections are common locations for pedestrian crashes because they bring together vehicles moving in different directions and people crossing the street. Turning vehicles can create added risk, especially when drivers focus on traffic flow rather than checking for pedestrians in crosswalks.
Visibility can also affect safety in these areas. Street lighting, parked cars, and other obstacles may make it harder for drivers to see someone crossing. Pedestrians may also misjudge how quickly a vehicle is approaching, particularly at night.
Traffic patterns and signal timing can further influence safety. Busy intersections often require quick decisions from both drivers and pedestrians, which can increase the chance of mistakes and lead to serious incidents.
