A Volvo XC90 was headed south on County Road 25 and reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign before entering Highway 18, where it struck a Honda CR-V. The impact sent the Honda onto its side, where it came to rest.

The Honda's driver, identified as 78-year-old Karlyn Kay Eckman of Saint Paul, Minnesota, was taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd with injuries described as non-life-threatening. North Ambulance and the sheriff's office responded to the scene, where the road was reported dry at the time of the crash.

The sheriff's office said its information on the crash is believed complete, though the circumstances leading up to the stop-sign violation remain under review. No citations were listed in the initial report.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes distracted driving so risky at intersections?

Even a glance away from the road can mean missing a stop sign or a vehicle with the right of way, and intersections leave little time to react once a driver realizes the mistake.

Can weather or road surface affect a crash like this one?

Wet, icy, or debris-covered roads can extend stopping distances and make it harder to react in time, though in this case the road was reported dry when the crash happened.

What should someone do right after a car accident?

Check for injuries, call 911, move to a safe spot if possible, and exchange information with the other driver. Photos of the scene and a written note of what happened can help later on.

Where do most traffic crashes tend to occur?

A large share of crashes happen at intersections, where crossing paths and stop signs or signals create the most opportunities for a mistake.
