Frequently Asked Questions
Do pedestrian crashes happen more at night?
Limited visibility after dark makes it harder for drivers to see people on foot, so nighttime hours tend to see more of these crashes than daytime ones.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a vehicle?
Get to a safe spot if possible, call 911, and seek medical care even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take time to appear. Get the names of any witnesses and wait for police to arrive and file a report.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers and walkers both need to watch for each other, especially where lighting is poor or speeds are higher.
What can drivers do to help spot pedestrians in the road?
Slowing down in areas without sidewalks or street lighting, scanning the roadside, and avoiding distractions behind the wheel all make it easier to see someone walking in or near the road.
