Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many pedestrian crashes occur at intersections, crosswalks, or crossings where foot traffic and vehicles or trains share the same path, especially where visibility is limited or signals are absent.
Are pedestrian accidents more common at night?
Yes, reduced lighting and lower visibility make it harder for drivers or train operators to see pedestrians, and a large share of pedestrian deaths nationally happen after dark.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car or train?
If possible, call 911 immediately, stay at the scene, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries aren't immediately obvious. Get the names of any witnesses and request a copy of the official report once it's available.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in a marked crosswalk, but at train crossings, pedestrians must always yield to an approaching train regardless of signals or barriers.
What to Do After a Train Accident in Ocala, FL
Anyone who witnesses a pedestrian struck by a train should call 911 right away and avoid approaching the tracks until it's confirmed safe to do so. If you or a loved one are involved in or affected by this kind of accident, seek medical attention promptly, since shock can mask the severity of injuries. Keep a record of any communication with police or the railroad, and ask the investigating agency how to obtain a copy of the final report once it's complete. Reaching out to local victim support services can also help families navigate the days following a sudden loss.
