What the Numbers Say About Injury Crashes on Maryland Roads
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 1,947,298 passenger-vehicle occupants were injured in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023. That figure covers people hurt badly enough to need medical attention, from bruises and strains to chest injuries like the one reported in this crash, and it shows how routine intersection crashes add up to a large share of the country's road toll.
Many of these injuries come from sudden deceleration, when a body in motion is stopped fast by a seatbelt, airbag, or the steering wheel. Chest pain after a crash is common even in collisions that look minor from the outside, because the impact can bruise muscle, crack ribs, or strain the heart itself.
Intersections like the one where two state highways meet carry extra risk because vehicles cross paths at speed, with turning movements and cross traffic adding more ways for drivers to misjudge gaps or timing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I feel chest pain after a car crash?
Chest pain after any collision should be treated as a medical emergency. Even if symptoms seem mild, it's best to be checked by paramedics on scene or go to an emergency room, since injuries to the chest and heart aren't always obvious right away.
What are the most common injuries in car accidents?
Whiplash, bruising from seatbelts, broken ribs, and head or chest trauma are among the most frequent injuries reported after collisions, particularly at intersections where impact angles vary widely.
What usually causes crashes at busy intersections like this one?
Common factors include misjudged turns, failure to yield, distracted driving, and speed. Investigators typically review vehicle positions, skid marks, and witness accounts to determine what happened.
Does speed make a crash more serious?
Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force of impact, which raises the likelihood of serious injury even in crashes involving the same vehicles and road conditions.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Ocean Pines, Maryland
If you're involved in a crash in Ocean Pines, stay as still as possible until emergency crews arrive, especially if you feel any pain in your chest, neck, or back. Call 911 even for what seems like a minor collision, since some injuries take hours to show symptoms.
Once responders arrive, let them evaluate you fully before deciding whether you need transport to a hospital. Keep a record of what you're told at the scene, including which agencies responded, and follow up with your own doctor in the days afterward if anything feels off.
