Hollywood, FL (May 20, 2026) – A Hollywood police officer was hospitalized early Wednesday after a BMW crossed the median and struck a patrol SUV on Hollywood Blvd near North Ocean Dr. The violent crash happened shortly after midnight, according to police.
Video from the roadway showed heavy damage to the police SUV, including deployed airbags and shattered glass near a fallen palm tree. A red BMW nearby also showed major front- and rear-end damage with its doors open after the collision.
Investigators said the BMW was traveling in the opposite direction before crossing into oncoming lanes and hitting the patrol vehicle. The driver then ran from the roadway before emergency units arrived. A search for the suspect did not lead to an arrest.
The officer received non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Police later stated that speed was likely a factor in the wreck. Northbound lanes in the vicinity remained closed for several hours while crews cleared debris and inspected the roadway.
Detectives continue working to identify and locate the driver involved in the overnight collision. We are thinking of the injured officer and wish them a full recovery.
Why Median Crossovers Often Lead to Serious Highway Crashes
Crashes involving vehicles crossing medians can be especially dangerous because they often place drivers directly into oncoming traffic. These collisions often occur at higher speeds, reducing the time available for other motorists to react. Sudden lane intrusions may also increase the likelihood of head-on or side-impact contact.
Roadway barriers, reflective markers, and median designs are commonly used to reduce the risk of crossover on major streets and highways. Investigators often examine factors such as speed, driver impairment, distraction, and roadway visibility after these types of crashes occur. Airbags and seat belts can help reduce the severity of injuries, though violent contact may still cause significant harm. In some cases, damaged landscaping, utility poles, or traffic signs near the roadway can also create additional hazards after a vehicle leaves its lane.
