Frequently Asked Questions
Does a vehicle's speed change a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Yes. Slower speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of impact, which lowers the chance of serious injury or death for a pedestrian who is hit.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many occur at or near intersections and crosswalks, including areas close to schools where foot traffic is heavy during drop-off and pickup times.
Are pedestrian crashes more common after dark?
Low-light conditions, including early morning and evening hours, can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians, which raises the risk of a crash during those times.
What should someone do after being hit by a vehicle?
Call 911, stay as still as possible until help arrives, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries are not immediately obvious.
