Youngsville, LA (May 24, 2026) – The Louisiana State Police Trooper, Monique Lavergne, with the Public Affairs Section, was called to the scene of a fatal head-on collision that claimed the life of a 78-year-old woman on Louisiana Highway 89 near Hopeland Plantation Road on Friday afternoon, May 22.

Lorita Gilmore was driving a GMC Terrain northbound along Louisiana Highway 89 while a Nissan traveled southbound at the same time. The Nissan crossed the center line for reasons still under review and struck Gilmore’s vehicle head-on.

Gilmore was wearing a seat belt at the time, but she died from her injuries. The Nissan driver was taken to a local hospital with non-critical injuries. Emergency units were not required to provide additional on-site care beyond initial assistance.

The inquiry into the circumstances leading up to the head-on collision remains ongoing. We extend our sincere condolences to Gilmore’s family and loved ones.

Factors Commonly Reviewed in Head-On Highway Events

Serious roadway situations involving vehicles traveling in opposite directions are often examined through multiple forms of evidence. Investigators typically review vehicle positions, roadway markings, and physical damage patterns to understand movement before contact occurred. Driver statements, when available, may also help establish a timeline of travel leading up to the point of contact.

Medical reports can provide additional clarity regarding the extent of harm experienced by those involved. Environmental conditions such as lighting, weather, and traffic flow are also assessed to determine whether outside influences played a role. Analysts may compare all collected information to identify inconsistencies or confirm key details. This process can take time as laboratory results and documentation are reviewed.
