What Factors Can Increase the Risk of Serious House Fires?
House fires can spread rapidly when flames reach furniture, curtains, or other common household materials. Older wiring, overloaded outlets, unattended cooking, and heating equipment are among the most common causes linked to residential fires across the United States. Dry weather and strong winds may also allow flames to spread more quickly through a structure.
Burn injuries often happen when people attempt to escape through smoke-filled rooms or return inside for belongings or pets. Smoke inhalation can also create major health concerns within minutes. Safety experts recommend keeping working smoke alarms in every bedroom and near living spaces. Families are also encouraged to create exit plans with at least two ways out of the home so everyone knows where to go during a fire emergency.
