Castroville, TX (July 7, 2026) – One person was killed, and others were hurt Sunday morning, July 5, after a black Chevrolet Camaro rear-ended a GMC Yukon on westbound Highway 90 East at Tonde Pkwy in Castroville. The crash was reported at approximately 7 a.m.

The Yukon was carrying a family of four at the time of the wreck. One passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and another was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The Camaro’s driver was also taken to a hospital.

Alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the collision, though toxicology results are pending. Criminal charges will be determined based on those results and the findings of the ongoing investigation. No identities have been released following the accident. The cause of the crash is still being formally reviewed.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family affected by this tragedy, and we hope those hurt make full recoveries.

What Happens After a Suspected Impairment Crash Results in a Fatality?

When a fatal crash involves a driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the investigation that follows is treated with the same weight as other serious criminal cases. Toxicology testing is a standard part of the process, and results can take days or weeks to return from a laboratory. Until those results are confirmed, law enforcement typically refrains from filing charges related to impairment, though other charges may be pursued in the meantime.

Rear-end crashes at highway speeds are especially dangerous because the striking vehicle’s full momentum is transferred into the rear of the vehicle ahead. A family vehicle struck from behind at speed can be pushed forward violently, with occupants experiencing sudden and severe forces that safety systems may not fully absorb. Passengers in rear seats, who may have fewer protective features around them than front-seat occupants, can be particularly vulnerable in this type of collision.

When toxicology results confirm the presence of alcohol or a controlled substance above legal limits, prosecutors can pursue charges such as intoxication manslaughter under Texas law, which carries significant prison time upon conviction. The outcome of the criminal case will depend on the full findings of the crash investigation alongside the chemical test results. These cases are closely reviewed because the consequences, both legal and human, are severe.
