How Right-of-Way Violations Can Lead to Serious Highway Crashes
Right-of-way violations are a common factor in many serious highway collisions. These crashes often occur when one driver enters or crosses a roadway without allowing enough space for approaching traffic. Even at moderate speeds, side-impact contact can produce severe outcomes because occupants have less protection on the sides of a vehicle than at the front or rear.
Highway intersections and access points can present additional risks due to higher travel speeds and shorter reaction times. Drivers are expected to carefully judge traffic gaps before entering or crossing a roadway. Factors such as visibility, traffic volume, weather, and driver attention can all affect these decisions.
After a fatal roadway crash, investigators typically review vehicle positions, physical evidence, roadway markings, and witness statements to help establish the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
