Why Are Left-Turn Crashes Between Vehicles and Trucks Usually Severe?
Left-turn crashes can become dangerous when a driver misjudges the speed, distance, or position of approaching traffic. These turns require careful timing because vehicles moving in opposite directions may have limited space to avoid each other.
Collisions involving semi-trucks can be especially serious because of the truck’s larger size and weight compared with smaller vehicles. Trucks also require more distance to slow down or stop, which can limit the ability to avoid sudden movements. Factors such as visibility, traffic signals, roadway design, and driver attention can all influence the outcome of a turning maneuver. Careful observation and proper yielding can help reduce risks at intersections and other areas where vehicles cross paths.
