Why Vehicle Ejections Regularly Lead to Fatal Injuries
Vehicle ejections are among the most dangerous outcomes during roadway crashes because occupants may strike the ground, another vehicle, or surrounding objects after leaving the vehicle. Rollovers, in particular, increase the likelihood of ejection when a seatbelt is not used.
Investigators commonly review vehicle movement, roadway conditions, and occupant positioning after rollover crashes occur. Safety restraints are designed to help keep drivers and passengers inside the vehicle during a collision, reducing the chance of severe trauma. Rural roads may also create additional hazards because vehicles leaving the roadway can overturn on uneven shoulders, ditches, or embankments beside the travel lanes.
