Hillburn, NY (June 16, 2026) – One person was killed, and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash early Sunday morning on a highway ramp connecting Interstate 287 and Interstate 87 in Hillburn.
According to New York State Police, the wreck occurred shortly before 1:10 a.m. on Sunday, June 14, on the northbound Interstate 287 ramp leading to the northbound and southbound Interstate 87 split. The roadway is located just north of the New York-New Jersey state line.
Investigators said a northbound minivan had stopped on the center shoulder, positioned over the white fog line and partially within a travel lane. A northbound MINI Cooper then struck the rear of the minivan. One person died as a result of the collision, while two other people were hurt.
The identities of those involved and the extent of the injuries were not included in the initial report.
Troopers continue to examine the circumstances that led to the fatal accident. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life.
What Factors Can Contribute to Rear-End Crashes on Highway Ramps?
Highway ramps can present unique driving challenges because traffic patterns often change quickly as vehicles merge, exit, or adjust speeds. Drivers may have less time to react when a vehicle slows unexpectedly or stops in an area not typically used for standing traffic.
Visibility can also be reduced during overnight hours, making it more difficult to identify hazards ahead of time. The position of a stopped vehicle, roadway lighting, weather conditions, and traffic volume may all influence a driver’s ability to avoid contact. On high-speed roadways, even a brief delay in reaction time can significantly reduce the distance available for braking or steering away from danger. Because ramps often have limited shoulder space, any disabled or stopped vehicle can create additional risks for approaching motorists.
