What Causes Fatal Motorcycle Crashes at Rural Intersections in North Carolina?
Failure to yield is one of the leading causes of fatal motorcycle crashes at rural intersections. When a driver in a car fails to yield to an oncoming motorcycle, the smaller size of the bike can make it harder to judge its speed and distance, and the result is often a high-speed broadside or frontal collision with little warning for either party.
Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable at intersections because they have no surrounding structure to absorb a hit. Unlike car occupants, riders bear the full force of a collision directly. Rural roads compound this risk, as lower traffic volumes can make drivers less alert at crossings, particularly late at night when visibility is reduced and the roads are quiet.
